Gift card scams are becoming increasingly common. Scammers often create a sense of urgency to convince you to purchase gift cards and share the card numbers or PINs.
How Gift Card Scams Work:
Scammers may pretend to be a government agency, utility company, business, tech support representative, or even a friend or family member. They may claim you owe money, have an
emergency, or need to act quickly—and tell you to pay with gift cards.
How to Protect Yourself:
- Never use gift cards to pay bills, fines, taxes, debts, or unexpected fees.
- Never share a gift card number, PIN, security code, or photo of the card.
- Don’t let urgency pressure you into acting quickly.
- Verify unexpected requests by contacting the person or organization directly using a trusted phone number.
- If something doesn’t feel right, stop and talk to someone you trust before sending money.
Think You’ve Been Scammed?
If you’ve already purchased a gift card and shared its information with a scammer, contact the company that issued the gift card immediately and report the situation. Keep the gift card and your receipt as documentation.
If you believe your bank account or debit card information may also have been compromised, contact First Federal Savings Bank immediately at (812) 492-8200.
When in doubt, stop and verify before you pay. A few extra minutes could protect you from losing your money.
