Beware of Counterfeit United States Savings Bonds Scam

Apr 28, 2025 | 1 Minute Read

We would like to inform you that the United States Department of the Treasury has reported an increase in fraudulent activity related to the redemption of United States Savings Bonds (Series EE and Series I) at financial institutions.

See below for examples of Series EE and Series I Savings Bonds:

This scheme typically involves fraudsters persuading individuals to cash in counterfeit bonds in exchange for a share of the illicit profits. The volume of counterfeit bonds is continually rising, with estimated losses reaching $30 million.

Please remember that savings bonds are not a source of quick cash, and customers should not accept them from unknown individuals or entities. If someone instructs you to redeem a savings bond for a potential payout or any other benefit, it is a SCAM.

If you have any questions, please contact our Fraud Department at (812) 492-8200.
